We live in strange times. Auto journalists, especially those in America (really only in America), love to lament about the death of the station wagon. Yet right now we are living in the pinnacle of fast wagons.

At no time in the history have there been as many fast wagon for sale as there are right now. This is the high Renaissance of the ‘Angry Wagon.’  Right now there are FIVE European wagon’s that are all capable of sub 5 -second 0-60 mph times (and you can even buy the two bookends in America - i.e. the Merc and the Volvo). And note these are not the only fast wagons out there; the Cadillac CTS-V Sportwagon and Holden Commodore SS-V Redline are capable of similar numbers.

Just a few years ago this type of speed and power was relegated to the likes of the Porsche 911 and other exotic sports cars. But now, today, in 2014, you and four of your friends (and your favorite canine) can all enjoy some ridiculously quick fun in a wagon, which in today’s auto-landscape is kinda like an exotic car.

And here’s the run down of our five favorite super fast Euro wagons exotics:

  • 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Estate S - 0-60 mph: 3.6s
  • 2014 Audi RS6 Avant - 0-60 mph: 3.7s
  • 2014 BMW Alpina B3 Touring - 0-60 mph: 4.1s
  • 2014 Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake - 0-60 mph: 4.5s
  • 2015 Volvo V60 Polestar - 0-60 mph: 4.9s

These five are faster than a Porsche 911 Targa (966); faster than an NSX, a Ferrari Testarossa; a Lotus Esprit Turbo, and pretty much every sports-car 10 years or older.

In short, angry wagons = the new exotic.
